Grammar School Electives Offered

For the first time, Augustine Christian Academy is offering some electives at the Grammar School level. The following is a list of the Tuesday & Thursday electives and a short description of each. Listed with the description of each elective are the days and times the class meets, the name of the instructor, the ages who are allowed to participate in the class, and the cost for the class both for full time ACA students and for part time students. Band – Mr. Wes Atkinson; T/Th;  10:00 – 10:45; Grades 3-5. This is an introductory band program through Newsom Music, Inc. Students will have the opportunity to find their instrument and learn to play it well. There will be a series of performances throughout the year culminating in a multi-school concert in the spring. Cost: Instrument plus books and tuition FT: $400; PT: $600

Keyboard – Mr. Wes Atkinson;  Th only; 9:15 - 10:00;  Grades 1 and 2. This is a basic course in keyboard instruments. Cost: Instrument and book fee plus FT: $400; PT: $600

Elements of Music B – Mrs. Lisa Isgrigg; T/Th; 10:45 – 11:30; Grades 4 and 5. Elementary music provides a general introduction to music touching upon basic elements of theory, note-reading, music history, and appreciation of various composers and musical styles. Class instruction includes theory games, stories, listening, singing and playing simple instruments. Opportunities for group and solo performances occur throughout the school year.  Cost: FT: 0; PT: $350

Hands on Science A – Mrs. Lynn Fagg;  T/Th; 10:45 – 11:30;  Grades 2 and 3.  This course explores earth science and specifically interaction and systems in the fall and populations in the spring. It involves understanding science from a biblical perspective using God’s Design curriculum and experimentation and discovery with the Delta hands on units. Cost: FT: 0; PT: $350

Hands on Science B - Mrs. Lynn Fagg; T/Th; 12:00-12:45; Grades 4 and 5. This course will focus on relative position and motion in the fall and communities in the spring using Delta Hands On Experiments and God’s Design materials. Cost: FT: 0; PT: $350

Creative Writing Workshop A - Mrs. Gina Conroy; T/Th; 10:00-10:45; Grades 2 and 3. This course begins with instruction in the basic writing skills employed in Christian Journal Writing and moves on to cover how to write a full story and different styles of poetry. Cost: Lab fee $20 plus FT: 0; PT: $350

Creative Writing Workshop B - Mrs. Gina Conroy; T/Th; 10:45-11:30; Grades 4-5. This course is tailored towards more descriptive writing and will also contain a basic review of language arts. The students will complete individual poetry books and a full story book. Cost: Lab fee $20 plus FT: 0; PT: $350

Learning to Draw - Mrs. Linda Thornhill; T/Th; 12:45-1:30; Grades 3-5. This course focuses on learning the skills of drawing in different media. Course materials will be purchased with a lab fee. Cost: Lab fee $20 plus FT: 0; PT: $350

Hebrew Studies - Mrs. Barbie Odom; T/Th; 12:45-1:30; Grades 2-5. This class explores Hebrew music, culture and both ancient and modern language. Students will learn the Hebrew alphabet and a beginning level of vocabulary and grammar. Conversational Hebrew will be used in a variety of activities, songs and games. Cost: Lab fee $20 plus tuition FT: 0; PT: $350

Fun with Latin - Mr. Kirk Post; Tuesdays only, 12:00 - 12:45; K5-1st grade. This class introduces students to the Latin language and the ancient Roman culture where it was born as well as its importance and use in the West since then. A variety of games, songs and activities will help students gain a basic vocabulary, memorize of endings they will need later in further study and master some beginning conversation. Cost: FT: 0; PT: $175

Grammar Latin I - Mr. Kirk Post; T/Th; 12:45 - 1:30; Grades 2-5. This course introduces students to the basics of the Latin language and its importance to western culture.. Students will master beginning vocabulary, grammar and simple sentences through games, songs and activities. No previous Latin experience is required. A strengthening of English grammar skills and vocabulary is often a wonderful by-product. Cost: FT: 0; PT: $350

Grammar Latin II - Mrs. Karin Robson; T/Th; 12:45 - 1:30; Grades 3-5. This course continues the study of Latin through building vocabulary and strengthening grammar usage. Workbooks, games, songs and activities help students increase their abilities in Latin translation. Previous Latin training is required. Cost: FT: 0; PT: $350

BizTown - Mr. Steve Beresh; Tuesdays only; (October through March); 1:45 - 3:00; Grades 5-8. This course, in conjunction Junior Achievement, introduces students to the concepts of free enterprise and the factors of economy that impact any community. Through weekly lesson and hands on activities, students prepare themselves to participate in a simulated community activity at the Junior Achievement Biztown facility where they will play the roles of bankers, workers, and CEO’s among other jobs. They will buy and sell, pay taxes and write checks, and many more of the normal everyday activities that keep the economy of a community going. Cost: FT: $50; PT: $75. NOTE: It takes approximately 100 students to run Biztown, therefore, we will most likely join with another Christian school to participate. Even with this, it will be necessary for us to have a minimum of 35-40 students to offer the program.

Junior Performing Arts - Mrs. Gale Post and Mrs. Dawn Redden; T/Th; After school, 1:45- 3:00; Grades 2-8. This junior version of ACA’s Performing Arts program will be presenting “The Nutcracker - a Youth Musical” on December 11th & 12th. Students will receive instruction in voice, choreography, drama, and stage presence. Program will include a pre-production workshop, beautiful costumes, exciting sets, and of course, a cast party. Auditions will be Sept. 1st & 3rd. Cost: $55 and some parental involvement.
